This song was inspired by two ideas that whirled around my mind in 2020. One was a story in Armenian lore about the importance of letting your footsteps be heard so that the ancestors can know that you have survived as a people--that you carry the culture forward. The other was the beautiful concept of Sankofa (a word from the Akan tribe in Ghana), that says that you must know your past in order to move strongly into the future.

Let your feet resound upon this ground of hardened blood and tears
Let us hear the sound of footfalls marching forward through the years

Mother tell me how to stop the thundering steps of those who run
Faster than the children with their faces upturned to the sun

Always turn to look behind to see the place from whence you spring

Mother how can I make sure their wings stretch long enough to fly
How to calm my fears of all the dangers lurking in the sky
